Trucking Fleet Tyre Management, Tracking And Consulting

Premature Stripping Laid Bare

Huge sums of money are being wasted by transport fleet operators purely because some of their suppliers are actually doing too much.

Buses, vans and trucks all seem to be exposed to the same fate, according to Australia’s only independent business-to-business level tyre trader and maintenance expert, Bear’s Tyres.

Managing Director of the company, Mr Brad Bearman, says most tyre suppliers strip tyres from vehicles a little too early, when all that should be done is next to nothing!

“Often, tyres are being taken off the vehicle with at least 20% meat (tread content) still on them” said Mr Bearman.

“Yet, most of these tyres can rapidly be re-grooved and re-capped and a lot more mileage can be gained from them which sensibly lowers the running costs on each vehicle.

“Unfortunately, most companies that operate fleets – especially the larger fleets – don’t know any better and are suffering unnecessarily higher costs because of these reasons.

“If, for instance, a large, national fleet operator spends a million dollars on tyres each year, effectively its management could be sacrificing $200,000 annually.

“Although the established tyre dealers stand to benefit from tyres being retired a little early, this is not a deliberate action on their part.

“The reason this happens is that the dealerships don’t have the technically skilled personnel – nor the experience – to recognise which tyres can be serviced to extend their wear-life, so the default action by them is to replace the in-situ tyre with a new one”.

For the last 20 years, Mr Bearman has been advocating how retreading is the ideal solution for some businesses; depending on the size of the operation, the frequency of its movements and the level of output required from every single tyre.

Bear’s Tyres stands in a unique market position as an independent tyre consultancy and seller, as well as an outsourced bureau for managing and repairing fleet tyres with its Bear’s Tyre Tracker. Hence, the company is bound to no commercial brand of tyres.

“Unless teleportation is developed soon, tyres will always be a key component of the transport sector, so to maximise the lifespan of each tyre and reduce turnover always has a positive impact on the bottom line.

“Not only does tyre maintenance increase profits for fleet managers, it also reduces the amount of tyres discarded.

“This is because the retirement day of each and every tyre can be accurately predicted, therefore allowing operators to efficiently manage the transfer of spent units to rubber recyclers.”
